Our scripture today is John 15:1-2 (MEV).
I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that bears no fruit, He takes away. And every branch that bears fruit, He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
In John’s Gospel Jesus makes a series of “I am” statements. Today’s verse is the last of these. The others are:
John 6:35 I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me shall never hunger, and whoever believes in Me shall never thirst.
John 8:12 I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.
John 10:7 I am the door of the sheep.
John 10:11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
John 11:25 I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, yet shall he live.
John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
In all of these Jesus expresses an aspect of His saving grace through a metaphor we can more easily understand. Today’s example shows that when we have a connection to Him, our discipleship can be fruitful, sharing the love of God and His call to kingdom work with everyone.
Loving Lord, you sent Jesus to be our Savior and Teacher, showing us the way to live in love with You and all people. Bless us to be fruitful followers of Christ, that the world may know You. Amen.
