Our scripture today is Song of Songs 1:1 (NRSVUE).

The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s.

I thought a lot about this book. I thought about skipping it, but I knew one of you would say “uh, what about Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon in some translations). I remember reading this book for myself at eleven or twelve and looking around thinking “do they know this stuff is in the Bible?!” I know we never read it in Sunday School. However, I turn to the Apostle Paul who testifies “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (2 Timothy 3:16). This is more than beautiful and vivid poetry, it is a metaphor describing the love of the Creator. There is nothing “wrong” with this scripture, what’s wrong is US! Like Adam and Eve, we know our sin and are ashamed. God made everything and pronounced it good; we must accept this wonderful gift as God has made it for us.

Loving Lord, we are sorry for the way we abuse the beautiful things You have given us. Help us to see Your gifts in context and use them wisely and with love. Amen.
