Our scripture today is 1 Kings 17:1 (ESV).
Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.”
In this chapter we begin the story of the prophet Elijah who spoke for the Lord in the northern kingdom. Ahab is among the worst of kings, and scripture records some awful ones. Elijah is sent to directly confront the idol worship that is being practiced in Israel. He tells the king and the people there will be no dew or rain unless by God’s word through him, a challenge to one of their idols that supposedly controlled the rain. Elijah stands boldly for the Lord, an example of faith for us all.
Heavenly Father, we are blessed to go in Your name to share Your love everywhere. Help us to stand with all the faithful who have worked for Your kingdom. Amen.
