Our scripture this morning is 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12.
Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before. Then people who are not believers will respect the way you live, and you will not need to depend on others.
Paul’s lesson in this passage to the Thessalonians teaches a peaceful and self supporting way of life, setting an example for others. Being a follower of Jesus means being aware of our needs and those of others, helping as God gives us the opportunity. We are responsible for ourselves, but we must also be ready to assist those who truly need our help.
Paul was a tent maker and often supported himself by plying his trade so as not to be a burden to those he visited. Many others gave to his ministry, and through this he gathered a gift for those who were suffering persecution and poverty in Jerusalem (1 Corinthians 16:1). Caring for others was a key teaching from Jesus Himself.
In Genesis 4:9 Cain asks sarcastically “am I my brother’s keeper?” The answer from God is a resounding “YES!” We are all charged to watch over our brothers and sisters in love. God has blessed us to be able to care for each other as His children, made in His image and sent to share His gifts with everyone.
Loving Lord, You created a beautiful world for us and gave us what we need to live in harmony. Help us to see when others fall below society’s radar and bring Your love and care where it is needed. Amen.
