Our scripture this morning is Genesis 1:1-5.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

As we celebrate the first day of a new year, it is good for us to remember the very first day, when God began creating everything that exists. After making a place for us and things for us to use and enjoy, God created us to be in relationship with Him and each other. We are all made in His image and for His purpose.

John 1:1 tells us more about God’s creating activity, saying ”In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.“ It goes on to explain that Jesus is the Word, and ”all things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being“ (John 1:3). Jesus is eternally connected to the Father, and we can be connected as well when we repent of our sin and accept Him as our Lord.

God offers us a new beginning every day, an opportunity to leave behind the failures of yesterday and look hopefully to the promise we have in Him. He is always ready to welcome back His beloved children. Today let us begin a closer walk and strive to be the people He intends us to be.

Loving Lord, we are grateful for the gift of creation, and the connection You offer us. Bless us to go in Your name, sharing the joy we find in You with everyone. Amen.
