Our scripture this morning is Revelation 4:9-11.
Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”
Have you ever been part of a particularly moving worship service? Then try to imagine what worship in heaven must be like. While the message, music and scripture all play a part in this, what is most important is our response. That is the main point of this passage from Revelation.
All of God’s creatures, heavenly and earthly, are given free will to choose for themselves. This is the story of Satan and those who followed him rather than obey God’s will. It is also our unfortunate story, choosing selfishly rather than choosing our Creator. However, in His mercy God waits patiently for us to return to Him in repentance.
When we worship God personally, we offer thanks and praise. When we gather together for worship, it is magnified. We can be part of the heavenly choir, singing “glory, honor and power!” to the Lord.
Gracious God, You made all things and we are grateful for our very being. Send us in Your name that all may hear the Good News and worship You. Amen.
