Our scripture this morning is John 3:31-36.
“He has come from above and is greater than anyone else. We are of the earth, and we speak of earthly things, but he has come from heaven and is greater than anyone else. He testifies about what he has seen and heard, but how few believe what he tells them! Anyone who accepts his testimony can affirm that God is true. For he is sent by God. He speaks God’s words, for God gives him the Spirit without limit. The Father loves his Son and has put everything into his hands. And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.”
John the Baptist speaks plainly about who Jesus is and why He has come. He tells us that “anyone who accepts His testimony can affirm that God is true” (v. 33). Later Jesus teaches “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).
It is hard for us to understand what Heaven is like or how Jesus and the Father are connected because as humans we can’t experience or explain it. However, through His lessons, Jesus shared examples that help us understand. He also taught us that while we will never know some things here on earth, those details are not nearly as important as our relationship with God and each other.
Our faith doesn’t lead to complete knowledge or understanding, as humans there are things we can’t comprehend. Our faith is based on accepting God’s love sent through Jesus, and sharing His love with everyone. We are called to serve each other in His name and that will lead us to eternal life.
Loving Lord, we are grateful for all our many blessings, none more important than Jesus our savior. Help us to learn and apply what He taught, showing Your love to a world in need. Amen.
