Our scripture this morning is 2 Corinthians 6:14-18.
Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you. And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.
Paul has some strong words for us about the ways of the world, warning that accepting its sin can lead us into sin as well. He cautions against being “a partner with evil” (v. 15). Sadly, it seems some things haven’t changed in our human condition over two thousand years.
We are called to be in the world but not of the world. Paul explains we are not to “be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2). The evil that is all around us may be strong, but God’s power and love is stronger still. All we have to do is choose His way over the ways of the world.
This can be difficult, but we must remember that “we are the temple of the living God” (v. 16). This awesome gift of God with us reminds us that we were created in His image, beloved children, meant for good, not evil. It is up to us to believe His promise of salvation and eternal life, and live in the light of His love.
Heavenly Father, we are sorry for the times we let evil into our lives and ignore Your word and Your blessing. Help us to be strong in faith, standing with our brothers and sisters to bring Your love to all the world. Amen.
