Our scripture this morning is ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭20:25-28.

But Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world Lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus teaches that those who wish to be leaders in the kingdom must also be servants of their brothers and sisters. This is a much different thing than the world teaches us. Earthly leaders don’t tend to behave this way, preferring that others do the work.

At the Last Supper, Jesus showed His followers this servant attitude by washing their feet. This was a task normally performed by the lowliest servant in the house, but Jesus sets the example for all of us. People’s needs are more important than our dignity or position.

How are we serving in the kingdom? We must be ready to use the gifts we have been given when the situation arises. Jesus didn’t say “serve where you’re comfortable or when you feel like it”, He told us “even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many” (v. 28). If Jesus was willing to do so Himself, we can do no less.

Loving Lord, You taught and showed that the way will not always be easy, but we are called to follow You no matter what. Help us to go in Your name, loving all people as You first loved us. Amen.
