Our scripture this week is Matthew 11:25-30.
At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus invites us to give up things that weigh us down and follow Him. He calls us to “take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (v. 29). This is much different than imperial edicts of Rome or the intricate law of the Pharisees that the people knew then.
Our current situation finds us worried and weary of the things we face. In that respect we are no different than the first century folk who looked to Jesus for rest and hope. While our society and lifestyle may be different, Jesus calls us to His side just as He has always done.
What burden are you carrying that weighs you down? Ask Jesus for the strength you need to bear it or the wisdom to lay down those things not worth dragging around any longer. In Him we are promised rest for our souls.
Loving Lord, You call us to let go of the temporary and take up the eternal by following You. Show us the way to be the children of God, loving and caring for each other as You intended. Amen.
